Borovets hotels are clustered around the lifts, so the main choice is which lift you want closest: the gondola in the resort centre or the Sitnyakovo chairlift a few minutes away. Hotels further down the road towards Samokov trade that convenience for quiet and space, which suits spa breaks better than early starts.

Borovets suits beginners, intermediates and families who want the slopes to start at the edge of the village and a short transfer from Sofia. Christmas, New Year and the February half-term weeks are the busiest, and weekends also bring visitors up from Sofia.

Where to stay in Borovets: the zones
Borovets, often spelt Borovec, is a small resort on the northern slopes of the Rila mountains. Hotels in Borovets, Bulgaria, fall into three broad areas, and the right one depends on which lifts you plan to use.
Resort centre near the gondola. The gondola starts in the centre, beside the main run of shops, ski hire, bars and restaurants. Staying here puts the fastest route to the higher slopes on your doorstep, and the beginner drag lifts at the foot of the mountain are close by. Expect more noise in the evenings, especially in peak weeks.
Sitnyakovo lifts side. The Sitnyakovo Express chairlift starts a few minutes' walk from the gondola, and together with the Martinovi Baraki Express it serves a separate set of runs. A hotel near these lifts suits skiers who expect to spend most days on that side. Markudjik, the highest part of the ski area, is reached through the gondola side, so do not assume a hotel near Sitnyakovo puts you close to everything.
Samokov road. The road down towards Samokov, the nearest town, has hotels set back among the pine forest, further from the lifts. They can be quieter, but you will need a shuttle, taxi or car to reach the slopes, which suits spa breaks better than full ski weeks. Borovets is part of Samokov municipality, so addresses and hotel names can mention Samokov even when the hotel is in the resort. Our guide on telling Samokov town apart from a Borovets address explains.
Borovets hotels we track
We track five Borovets hotels. They are listed alphabetically, not ranked, and each name links to the hotel's page, where the facts we have confirmed carry their source.
- Festa Winter Palace. Suited to: near the Sitnyakovo Express, 5-star and spa. The register category is 5-star: https://ntr.tourism.government.bg/CategoryzationAll.nsf/api/data/collections/name/vRegistarMNValid1?ps=20&search=%5BCategoryGiven%20%3D%205%5D%20AND%20%28%2A%D0%A4%D0%95%D0%A1%D0%A2%D0%90%20%D0%A3%D0%98%D0%9D%D0%A2%D0%AA%D0%A0%2A%29 Check dates
Whichever you consider, ask three things before booking: which lift is nearest and how far it is in metres, whether there is a ski and boot room, and whether the spa is included in your stay or charged separately.
The walk to the slopes is covered in a lifts guide that is not on this site yet. The hotel notes above are the distances this directory has checked.
Ski area, season and getting there
Borovets has two main lift bases. According to the official resort site, the gondola climbs from the centre towards the Yastrebets and Markudjik slopes, which have their own chairlifts higher up, while the Sitnyakovo Express and Martinovi Baraki Express chairlifts serve the runs on the other side. Several drag lifts cover the easier slopes.
Height matters for snow. The resort's weather stations run from about 1,350 m in the centre to 2,486 m at Markudjik 2, the highest point listed on the resort site, so the upper slopes tend to hold snow longer in spring.
Season dates depend on snow and change each year. During the season, the official site shows live lift and piste status, and its winter activities include night skiing, a fun park and a children's snow park.
If you are new to skiing, plan your dates around lessons. The resort's ski school currently forms beginner groups on Sundays only, with group lessons from Sunday to Friday, and recommends arriving on a Saturday, according to the resort site.
Sofia Airport is the nearest airport, roughly 70 km away by road. The drive runs through Samokov before the final climb to the resort. For the wider Rila region, including Rila Monastery as a day trip, the official tourism portal, Bulgaria Travel, is the place to start.

Questions
How far is Borovets from Sofia Airport?
About 70 km by road. The route runs south-east through Samokov, the town below the resort, and climbs the last stretch through forest. Allow extra time in snow and on Friday evenings, when Sofia traffic heads to the mountains, and confirm your transfer pickup before you fly.
When does the ski season in Borovets start and end?
It depends on snow, not on a fixed calendar. The resort confirms opening and closing dates each year on its official site, which also shows which lifts and pistes are open. Christmas, New Year and February half-term are the busiest weeks.
Is Borovets good for beginners?
Yes. The gentlest slopes and drag lifts are at the foot of the mountain, close to the resort centre, so first days do not involve a gondola ride. The resort's ski school currently forms beginner groups on Sundays only, with lessons running Sunday to Friday, so plan to arrive on a Saturday.
Is Borovets worth visiting in summer?
Yes, for walkers and mountain bikers. Borovets is a common starting point for hikes towards Musala, the highest peak in Bulgaria, and the resort site lists a bike park in summer. Evenings are quieter than in winter, and some hotels close between seasons, so check yours is open.
